Today, the Baltimore Ravens announced that they had extended head coach John Harbaugh’s contract. Coach Harbaugh was originally under contract with the Ravens through 2018, but the new extension will keep him in Baltimore until 2019. Harbaugh joined the Ravens in 2008, and from his first year through 2012, the Ravens made the playoffs each year. John Harbaugh also led Baltimore to a Super Bowl victory, against his brother, Jim Harbaugh, in the 2012 season. Since winning the Super Bowl in 2013, the Ravens have been on a downswing, making the playoffs only once in four seasons. Harbaugh has come under heat for this, but the Ravens organization still believes in him.

Since joining the Ravens in 2008, John Harbaugh boasts a tremendous record of success. His all time coaching record sits at 95 wins and 64 losses. Through his success, Harbaugh has earned himself a reputation as one of the premier coaches in the NFL. However, the team has had limited success as of late. Since winning Super Bowl 47, the team has an overall record of 31 wins and 33 losses. Coach Harbaugh is the first to take the blame for the failures of the team, but not all blame should be placed on him.

Steve Bisciotti, the owner of the Baltimore Ravens, made an excellent decision in extending Harbaugh’s contract. Harbaugh is one of the best coaches in the league, despite the recent shortcomings of the team. The move shows that Bisciotti is dedicated to consistency in Baltimore, something that he has prided the organization on. An obvious example of the consistency of the Ravens is Ozzie Newsome. Newsome has been calling the shots as general manager as long as that position has existed in Baltimore. Consistency on the coaching staff is a great way to continue success in the NFL. The extension is a good sign for John Harbaugh, but it is not a definite seal of approval. Bisciotti could decide to fire Harbaugh if he fails to make the playoffs again. This seems doubtful, however, as the Harbaugh has been a major part of this organization for the past decade.
