Today, Jeff Zrebiec of the Athletic reported that the Ravens were shopping around the former second-round pick, Kamalei Correa. Correa, now in his third year in the NFL, has done little in Baltimore during his tenure. His strong preseason performance caught the attention of many fans and teams alike. The Baltimore Ravens saw Correa as a bubble player heading into the preseason. Even with his impressive performance, however, Correa was still on the roster bubble. The Ravens have many difficult decisions coming up, as the team must cut the roster down from 90 men to just 53. This trade gives the Ravens a way to remove Correa from the roster, and also be compensated. In return for Correa, Baltimore received a 2019 sixth-round pick.

In Baltimore since 2016, Correa failed to ever break out like the Ravens thought he would. Correa declared for the draft as an outside linebacker, but the Ravens moved him to inside after he joined the team. Correa was never fully able to develop at his new position. In 25 games, he only started four. In the two years with the Ravens, Correa only recorded 19 combined tackles. His time in Baltimore was short, and the Ravens decided to part ways with him, as the organization believed he had no future with the team.

The trade of Correa opens the door for another roster bubble player to make the roster. The Ravens need to fill short-term holes with the impending absences of Jimmy Smith, Willie Henry, and Hayden Hurst. All three of these players will miss part of the early season but are scheduled to return in a short matter of time. The Ravens will likely keep all three on the roster as the team enters the regular season but may look to add a temporary replacement. Now, with Correa’s roster spot open, players such as Stanley Jean-Baptiste, and Maxx Williams have a better chance at securing a spot on the team.
